  3. A FEW RULES OF DISC GOLF

  6. 1) The object of the game is to throw a disc (frisbee) from the tee
  7. to the basket in the fewest number of throws. After each throw, the
  8. player must throw again from the spot where the disc has landed,
  9. until it can be thrown into the basket. On each hole, the score for
  10. each player is the number of throws it takes to "hole out" by
  11. getting the disc into the basket. After playing all the holes, the
  12. player with the lowest score wins.

  14. 2) The rules in general are similar to the game of golf
  15. (ball-golf), using similar words such as "putting" (a short shot to
  16. put it into the basket), "teeing off" (your first shot for each
  17. hole starting at the tee), and "lie" (which is the spot where your
  18. disc lands).

  20. 3) The course is made up of 9 or 18 "holes" (some courses have 27
  21. holes). Each hole starts at an area marked as the "tee" and has a
  22. fairway leading to the basket. Tees are usually cement, grass, or
  23. dirt.

  25. 4) When playing in a group, the person who is the furthest from the
  26. basket is the next one to throw. When starting on the next hole,
  27. the person with the best (lowest) score on the previous hole is the
  28. first to "tee off", then the next best and so on. If tied, then the
  29. best on the hole before that goes first, and so on.

  31. 5) When making a shot from the fairway, a player must have one foot
  32. on the "lie" and the other foot must be no closer to the hole.
  33. After throwing the disc the player is allowed to jump forward.
  34. (This is called the "follow-through".)
  35.  
  36. 6) When "putting" from closer than 10 meters (33 feet), you are not
  37. allowed to lunge forward or follow-through until the disc comes to
  38. a complete rest in the basket or on the ground.

  40. 7) If the disc comes to rest in a tree or other object on the
  41. course above two meters, the thrower will be assessed a one-throw
  42. penalty. The lie will be marked on the ground directly below it.
  43.  
  44. There are several other rules that deal with more complicated
  45. aspects of the game and tournament play. If you join the PDGA
  46. (Professional Disc Golf Association), you will receive a rule book,
  47. a personalized golf disc, a "mini" marker disc, and a subscription
  48. to Disc Golfer Magazine. This costs $25 initially, then $10 a year
